Omega 3 Fatty AcidsThe Standard American Diet (SAD) lacks beneficial fats like omega 3 fatty acids. It has been shown that a deficiency in this fat is linked to dry or acne prone skin, irregular hormone regulation, arthritis, obesity, and aging to name a few. Other abnormalities that are a direct result of essential fatty acid deficiency are as follows: 1)growth retardation2)weakness 3)vision impairment 4)learning disabilities 5)high triglycerides (refer to the cholesterol page) 6)high blood pressure 7)sticky platelets 8)tissue inflammation 9)low metabolic rate Alpha-linolenic acid has three double bonds, the first one occurring on the 3rd carbon atom making it look like a caterpillar bent in three places. It looks similar to that of an omega 6 fatty acid. Some of the useful functions are energy production, oxygen transfer, and hemoglobin production. These fats are used in the process of oxidation (this is the breakdown of foods in our body to create energy). Athletes have long prized the supplementation of omega 3 fatty acids with proper diet and exercise. Body fat seems to melt away. You radiate energy from your skin. Your mind is tack sharp. I can tell you from personal experience that a quality supplement will change your life; it did for me. Not only will this fatty acid help you lose weight, it will create a sense of fullness through out the day. A shake with EFA's in the morning for breakfast should keep you satisfied till lunch or even later. And I'm not just talking about satisfaction, but sustained energy. Coffee won't do that! You always want to keep a ratio of these fats so your body stays in check. If you were to consume only flax oil, there may be a propensity for deficiency in omega 6 a year down the road. And always, please check with your physician. |
